SYNOPSIS

A heavy smoker for over 20 years (two packs a day), actress and director of Brazilian film festivals abroad, Adriana L. Dutra decided to dig deep into the question: why is it so difficult to quit smoking?

What began as a personal interest expanded into a vast research on the subject. However, "Smoking I Wait" goes far beyond the scope of a self-serving documentary. Testimonies from anonymous individuals and celebrities (Ney Latorraca, Miúcha, Washington Olivetto, Carla Camuratti, amongst many others) reveal their battles with cigarettes, while advertisers, lawyers, sociologists, and doctors analyse the product’s promotional techniques and the consequences of nicotine use, as well as its high level of chemical and psychological dependence.

The film explores the evolution of the consumption of cigarettes since its appearance, exploring the changes in users’ habits throughout history as well as the sector’s marketing strategies, revealing the industry's lack of disclosure of medical data and compensations.

The revelations also extend to a generally overlooked aspect of the issue - the circumstances of tobacco growers who are left to their own devices and on the margins of the industry's monumental profits, as revealed by the farmers of Venâncio Aires, in Rio Grande do Sul. An inspired animation created by Fabiana Egrejas and Carlos Duba traces the historical and cultural evolution of cigarettes, whilst scenes from Hollywood cult films show how leading men and divas contributed to the tobacco industry's profits.

Amongst the dead - the staggering mark of 100 million deaths in the 20th century attributed to tobacco addiction - and those affected, there are those who manage to quit smoking in time – such as the director - at least until the film's premiere.
